Description
Hippo arrived at his shelter withdrawn, covered in ticks, with painful skin issues, no name, and no microchip. Since then, he has slowly blossomed into one of the sweetest and most gentle dogs. Calm, kind, and easy to handle, Hippo walks beautifully on the leash and has often been walked by older volunteers because he never pulls.

Shelter life was stressful for him, so is now at the sanctuary away from the noise and chaos and enjoying some peace and quiet. Hippo loves peaceful walks through town, parks, and forests, quietly exploring and stopping to sniff the flowers. He is wonderfully well behaved in public — traffic, busy streets, cafés, and other dogs do not bother him at all. He is happy simply sitting beside you or calmly continuing his walk.
Hippo is an undemanding companion who would be happiest with gentle walks and lots of cosy time at home. He has some back pain caused by spondylosis, which made him sensitive around his torso when he first arrived. He also suffered from alopecia, but thanks to good nutrition, supplements, and plenty of sardines — his absolute favourite — his soft “baby hippo” fur is growning back beautifully.
Despite his name, Hippo is not a fan of swimming pools, so no pool is required for this boy! He has become a huge favourite with volunteers because of his peaceful nature and quiet companionship.
Hippo would dearly love a calm and loving home of his own. We feel he would be happiest in a quiet household without young children, simply because of his back issues and need for a peaceful environment. Although he lives alone in his enclosure, he is calm and polite around other dogs outside the shelter and could likely live peacefully near other dogs, though he would probably prefer to be the only dog in the home.
Hippo’s shoulder height is approximately 54cm.
